The whole idea

From swap to evolution buddy

The swap

A new buddy every month. You learn from different people, different styles, different time zones. No pressure to click with everyone.

The buddy

Along the way you may find someone who makes healing feel light and empowering. This is what we call an evolution buddy: someone you hold and support through the rollercoaster ride of life.

Keep going, your way

If you find your buddy and would like to continue sessions, you can arrange them independently. Stay in the monthly swap too, or step out of it. Just let us know.

"The evolution buddy idea came from experiencing the magic of Havening on my PTSD, and wanting to see what else I could release. In 2020 I met Megan. We started monthly sessions and now it's weekly. She's been through all seasons and traumas with me."

The real practice

Holding space without fixing

Many of us come from helping and "fixer" backgrounds. Members tell us the growth edge here is learning to step back, sit in silence, and let the person receiving steer. That's the point, and we learn it together.

  • The person receiving drives the session and holds responsibility for it.
  • The person holding is a compassionate co-pilot, not the expert.
  • Open questions and reflecting back, instead of advice or directing.
  • If power dynamics show up, we make space to talk about them and how to keep you feeling safe and supported.
  • Celebrate the wins too. Clearing the old stuff makes room for that.
Common questions

Before you join

Do I have to join every month?

No. We encourage you to put yourself and your needs first. If it's a busy month, you're on holiday or something unexpected pops up, that's okay. Just let us know. If you need support but don't have the capacity to hold space for someone else, reach out to Kamaia. We can also offer a session to support and hold space for you.

I've just started my Havening training and I'm nervous. Can I join?

Absolutely. We created this space for what we wished we'd had when we started our own Havening journey: support, time to heal our own trauma so we can hold more compassion for others, and a chance to learn from different Havening styles and modalities. Come as you are, and learn along the way. There are no hierarchies here.

Do I have to work on my own healing?

Yes, this is the heart of it. Many of us came to Havening to help clients, friends and family, and forgot ourselves in the mix. The more we clear what we bring to the table, the more we give others permission to do the same. Here, the professional hat comes off and we show up as compassionate humans.

How is safety maintained in the group?

Each month we send a short check-in form asking how your buddy swap went, how it felt to receive and hold space, and whether you're in for next month. If you felt unsupported or anything came up, you can ask Kamaia (Havening Trainer and group organiser) to reach out. We'll debrief together and find what feels right for you.

Does it cost anything?

No, it's free, and always will be. Once you've completed the official 16-hour Havening training with a certified Havening Trainer, you can be supported, held and havened for free. There's no self-promotion here, only sharing knowledge and experience.
